What counts as a word?
Most counters split on whitespace: “hello world” is two words. Hyphenated compounds and contractions may count as one or two depending on the algorithm—treat borderline cases as approximate when a platform has a hard limit.
Character counts usually include spaces unless a field says “characters excluding spaces.” Meta titles and Twitter/X-style limits almost always include spaces and punctuation.
SEO snippets, essays, and social limits
Search snippets often display roughly 50–60 characters of a title and ~150–160 characters of a description. Counting before you publish prevents truncated SERP text. Essay and grant forms may count words differently than Google Docs—paste here as a second opinion.
