Mass vs weight in everyday language

In daily speech people say “weight” when scientists mean mass. Kitchen scales and luggage scales measure mass under standard gravity. The pound (lb) in avoirdupois is a unit of mass; pound-force (lbf) is a separate engineering unit on the force converter.

Do not confuse fluid ounces (volume) with ounces (mass). A cup of water and an ounce of gold measure different dimensions.

Travel, cooking, and fitness

Airlines often allow 23 kg per bag on international routes while US domestic tickets still quote 50 lb on some carriers—convert before packing. Recipes: 8 oz flour ≈ 227 g; butter sticks in the US are 4 oz (113 g) each.
